in some cases we already have a circuit, but we would like to tweak it. in such a case a digital potentiometer might be handy (I have no experience with them)
I was thinking about the speed control of my lathe, which is a plain old potmeter and maybe controlling the audio amplifier.

Yes, very. Been toying with them, a while back. There are some nice ones with 257 taps which are I2C controlled.

for the moment I was hoping indeed that overwhelming demand would lure you into creating one, but I have no IMMEDIATE use for it.
I am toying with analog pre-amps, connected to an arduino (soon to be a jeenode) and I need to sort of manage the pre-amps to give a gain matching the din or silence picked up by the mics. I need to make sure one pre-amp should not consistently amplify better than another one.
but just now it appeared the offending pre-amp is strangely enough the same one where I used a 10k resistor because I was out of 12K resistors, hmmmm...
