Basic Newb Question - Relays

Hi,

I'm really enjoying messing around with the jeenodes. My background is definitely not C and I'm having a bit of a 'brain fail' when it comes to dealing with received packets. What I'm trying to acheive is switching on and off 4 relay devices attached to the 4 ports of a remote jeenode. I seem to be running into a mental block about how I should be interpreting the package sent (ie Port 1 relay off, Port 3 on) into actions on the receiving node. It probably relates to my lack of knowledge re C etc. Any pointers/help/or directions to any suitable guides would be gratefully received!

Hi Dan,

As usual with techie things there are 101 ways to do things, especially when you are talking about two ends of communication system where you have made both ends!

So a quick question to clarify... How are you sending the message from the local JeeNode?

The ports library does have a remoteport implementation to allow you this kind of thing but I'm a bit old school and like to have control over everything myself so I tend to reinvent the wheel and make my own so I think I might have to bow out in favour of someone who has used remoteport so you can learn how to do it properly!

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sending the message using rf12_sendStart() rather than easysend, but am open to suggestions. Regarding the remoteports implementation, I have successfully tested the blink_xmit and blink_recv demos. Is this the best way to acheive what I want, especially if I may be adding other nodes in the future? (I know one person's 'best way' isn't another person's, but any help appreciated).

I'd probably just set bits in a single byte payload that's sent out. Then the receiving side tests each bit and sets the appropriate relay if true, or disables if false.

You might want a bit more intelligence such as , which lets you add other commands in the future without re-writing this code.

Thanks for the tips. With some reading of C fundamentals and your help I'm getting there, and hopefully with have a nice modular system in a few days time.

It happens that I did a simple jeenode with relay including the code. I'm just back from holiday. I wanted to write it on my blog but it will take some time. :-) If you need any help just let me know. I'm using a bistable relay.

Here we go a small tute. Just to do something different I used the relay as a vibration for tactile feedback. :-p
